Think like a millionaire, become a billionaire

While Bill Gates used to be the household name synonymous to the word “billionaire” before, there are other fortunate men who have replaced him in terms of this title. Mexico native Carlos Slim Helú (business magnate, philanthropist and chairman and CEO of Telmex, Telcel and América Móvil) has been named the world’s new richest man last March, even if his name barely rang a bell before then. This is because this man, even with a net worth of about around US$53.5 billion, leads a low-profile life. He doesn’t even own a yacht, and is reported to have been living in the same home for over 40 years.

How does a low profile man such as Slim amass such a great fortune in one lifetime? Forbes’ Investopedia.com gives “6 millionaire traits that you can adopt” that businessmen with seven-figure bank accounts commonly have.

  • Independent thinking. David Geffen, a self-made millionaire with $4.5 billion to his name in 2009, this American record executive and film producer was college dropout, but made millions founding record agencies and signed some of the most prominent musicians of the 1970s and ’80s. Although he didn’t take what many assume to be the usual path to success, his tireless work ethic and sense of personal conviction about artists’ potential allowed him to rack up a sizable fortune.
  • Vision. Millionaires are creative visionaries with a positive attitude. In other words, wealthy people not only have big dreams, they also believe they will come true. As such, wealth seekers should set lofty goals and not be afraid of uncharted territories. Bill Gates, the world’s richest person in 2009, did just that. The American chairman of Microsoft is one of the founding entrepreneurs who brought personal computers to the masses. Gates jumped into the personal computers business in 1975 and held on tight, creating Microsoft Windows in 1985. When consumers began to bring computers into their homes, Gates was ready to profit from this new age.
  • Skills. Writer Dennis Kimbro interviewed successful people to determine the traits they had in common for his book, “Think and Grow Rich” (1992). He found that they concentrated on their area of excellence. Millionaires also tend to partner with others to supplement their weaker skills. If you don’t know what you are good at, poll friends and family. Use training and mentors to refine your strong skills.
  • Passion. Billionaire investing guru Warren Buffett says “Money is a by-product of something I like to do very much.” Enjoying your work allows you to have the discipline to work hard at it every day. People who interact with money for a living, bankers for example, often love creating new deals and persuading others to complete a transaction. But finding your dream job may take time. The average millionaire doesn’t find it until age 45, and tends to be 54 (on average) before becoming a millionaire.
  • Investment. Millionaires are willing to sacrifice time and money to achieve their goals. They are willing to take a risk now for the opportunity of achieving something greater in the future. Investing may include securities or starting a business – either way, it is a step toward achieving great financial rewards.
  • Salesmanship. Millionaires are constantly presenting their ideas and persuading others to buy into them. Good salesmen are oblivious to critics and naysayers. In other words, they don’t take “no” for an answer. Millionaires also have good social skills. In fact, when writer T. Harv Eker analyzed the results of a survey of 753 millionaires for his book, “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind” (2005), he found social skills were more important than IQ. Just look at Donald Trump. His fortune has fluctuated over the years, but his ability to sell himself – whether as a TV personality or as the force behind a line of neckties – has always brought him back among the ranks of celebrity millionaires.

Enrile vows to counter new tax measures

Newly elected senator and former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile proclaims to be the new opponent of any new tax measures set to be imposed to the Filipino people. Coming in at number 5 in the very recent elections, he says “For sure I will oppose any new tax that will be imposed on the people,” when asked about the bills that he plans to prioritize in his term.

In September last year, Enrile was also a strong opponent of the proposed text on tax. Philippines, being the text capital of the world, has an approximately 75 million cell phone subscribers and the highest communication cost compared to other countries according to the Senate President. Enrile also said that 97 percent of the consumers were pre-paid subscribers, which will take up 70 to 72 million of the patron population.

On the other hand, the Department of Finance (DoF) said that the national government is expected to raise P73.92 billion from increasing value-added tax (VAT) rate to 15 percent, reducing corporate income tax (CIT) by 2015.
Finance Secretary Margarito B. Teves, whose term finishes on June 30 this year, said the decision on raising VAT from 12 percent to 15 percent will now depend on the next administration and Congress, adding they can only recommend measures aimed at sustaining fiscal sustainability.
“We have to offer them alternatives. For example, you did not go straight to 15 percent, you can do this gradually at the same time you can also calibrate the reduction of individual and corporate income tax,” Teves said.
Teves has recommended the next Congress approve bills to rationalize fiscal incentives, restructure excise taxes on tobacco and alcohol products and simplify net income taxation.

New tax exemption ruling for co-ops

While taxes may be the lifeblood of the government (as oftentimes exemplified both positively and negatively in ours), the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) gives way to certain sectors under considerable factors promulgated in accordance to court rulings. Other than the mandatory exemptions stated in the 1987 Philippine Constitution sets such as charitable and religious institutions and (Article VI, Section 28, paragraph 3)non-stock, non-profit educational institutions (Article XVI, Section 4(3)), and the recently amended Republic Act No. 9504 approved on 17 June 2008 exempting minimum wage earners from paying income tax, cooperatives can now also enjoy the exemption from the 20% withholding tax.

As of February this year, the Second Division of the High Court reversed a ruling of the Court of Tax Appeals in December 2007 ordering the Dumaguete Cathedral Credit Cooperative (DCCCO) to pay over P2.6 million in unpaid withholding taxes on interest from savings and time deposits of its members for the taxable years 1999 and 2000, as well as delinquency interest of 20 percent per annum.

The SC also effectively nullified the pre-assessment notice on tax deficiency against DCCCO issued by the regional office of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in Bacolod City. The High Court explained that cooperatives are not required to withhold taxes on interest from savings and time deposits of their members as declared by the country’s major tax collecting agency in BIR Ruling 551-888 promulgated on Nov. 16, 1988.
The SC noted that under Article 2 of RA 6938, “it is a declared policy of the State to foster the creation and growth of cooperatives as practical vehicle for promoting self-reliance and harnessing people power towards the attainment of economic development and social justice.”

“Thus, although taxes are the lifeblood of the government, the State’s power to tax must give way to foster the creation and growth of cooperatives,” the SC said.
